Week 13 was another bad one for the NFL's worst two teams as the St.

Week 13 was another bad one for the NFL’s worst two teams as the St. Louis Rams and Indianapolis Colts both continued their losing ways.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts actually showed some life under new starting quarterback Dan Orlovsky, and after falling behind 31-3 to the New England Patriots, they scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Still, a loss is a loss, and they walked away from Gillette Stadium with a 31-24 defeat.

Indianapolis dropped to 0-12 with the loss on Sunday and they really look headed for an 0-16 season. Yes, Orlovsky looked better than Curtis Painter had under center, but that’s not saying a whole lot.

The Colts still rank 29th in the NFL in total offense, averaging 293.1 yards per game. Meanwhile, the defense has been just as awful, as it ranks 28th in the league allowing 387.1 yards per game.

At this point it’s really hard to see Indianapolis turning things around and winning a game or two. The Colts are almost certainly headed for the top pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams aren’t a long way behind the Colts at the bottom of the league. After getting smacked 26-0 by the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, St. Louis fell to 2-10 on the season. Second-year quarterback Sam Bradford has battled injuries all season and has just not lived up to his preseason hype.

In nine games this season, Bradford has completed 179-of-328 passes (54.6 percent) for 1,971 yards, with six touchdowns and five interceptions. His passer rating of 72.3 ranks 28th out of the 31 quarterbacks who qualify.

Additionally, the Rams are 31st in the NFL in total offense (284.0 yards per game) and 23rd in total defense (allowing 366.2 yards per game). Translation: There isn’t much positive going on in St. Louis.

The Rams are almost certainly headed for a top-three pick in the 2012 draft and they need to add some offensive playmakers to the mix.

NFL Power Rankings, Week 13*

1. Green Bay Packers (12-0)
2. Baltimore Ravens (9-3)
3. San Francisco 49ers (10-2)
4. New Orleans Saints (9-3)
5.
The St. Louis Rams are going to need every bit of help if they want to pull of an upset in San Francisco against the 49ers on Sunday, but it turns out they will be without starting strong safety Darian Stewart. The only good news is that after missing five weeks, speedy wide receiver Danario Alexander may return to the lineup and give the offense a vertical threat it has sorely lacked over the past few weeks.

Stewart, a second-year safety from the University of South Carolina, who has been dealing with concussion symptoms since the Week 12 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, revealed that he would not play on Sunday against the 49ers, saying:

It’s just one of those things where you have to be safe and be smart, and I feel like it’s best that I don’t go this week….With those concussions, it’s my first, and I know that it’s something that can keep coming back from what people tell me. So I want to be smart with it.

via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Meanwhile, Rams’ wide receiver Danario Alexander, who has 20 receptions for 306 yards and one touchdown on the season, says he is ready to return to the lineup on Sunday:

I went out there and basically practiced almost every snap. It’s a good sign. I’m ready for the game.

via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Alexander has been dealing with an injury suffered back in Week 7 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Read More: John Skelton (QB – ARI), Patrick Peterson (CB – ARI), Sam Acho (LB – ARI), Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Cardinals at St. Louis Rams, Nov 27, 2011 11:00 AM MST

Beanie Wells set a franchise record with 228 yards rushing on a day that saw the Arizona Cardinals beat the Rams for the seventh-straight time in St. Louis. The Cardinals fell behind early and struggled through a poor game by QB John Skelton but improve to 4-7 on the season thanks to Wells’ big day, solid defense and a record-tying fourth punt return touchdown from Patrick Peterson.

The Cardinals defense was led by a very good game by rookie OLB Sam Acho, who recorded two sacks (five on the season) and forced two fumbles. ILB Daryl Washington continues to impress and the defensive line playing without starting NT Dan Williams (broken arm) held the Rams Steven Jackson to just 64 yards on 17 carries.

It wasn’t a pretty game offensively from either team as both quarterbacks struggled to convert third downs and score in the red zone. Sam Bradford was the better of the two, going 17-31 for 203 yards and one touchdown. John Skelton looked extremely inaccurate early, threw two picks and went 12-23 for 114 yards.

This game was clearly won on the ground and in the trenches. The Cardinals ran for a total of 268 yards compared to 86 for the Rams. Wells had a 71-yard run in the first quarter that got the Cardinals into the red zone and produced three points. He replicated that in the fourth with a 53-yard run (video below) that broke a 20-20 tie.

Both teams recorded seven points off punt return touchdowns. The Rams Nick Miller ran one back 88 yards in the first quarter and Patrick Peterson got his fourth of the year in the third (video here).

The Cardinals complete a three-game series of road games going 2-1 and are now 3-1 in games started by John Skelton (despite his poor play). Arizona will now be home for four of their last five games of the season starting with the Dallas Cowboys next week.

The St. Louis Rams have officially put offensive tackle Jason Smith on the injured reserve this week to officially end his season. Taylor has been out since the Oct. 23 game against the Dallas Cowboys were he suffered a concussion and since then has not been able to pass the tests to get back on the field. Wide receiver Mark Clayton came back for two weeks from the PUP list to only see limited action from a knee injury he suffered last year, and with the knee still bothering Clayton he has been placed on the injured reserve as well.

The Cardinals will be facing a banged up Rams team on Sunday as they have three players already listed out and four more who are questionable.

Marshawn Lynch(notes) is ready to have a huge game against the St. Louis Rams in Week 11, and fantasy football owners need to seek him out. At last look, Lynch was available in 25 percent of all Yahoo! leagues right now, meaning quite a few owners could benefit from his success against the Rams.

Playing against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 10, Lynch had 109 rushing yards, 58 receiving yards and a touchdown. That brought in 22.7 fantasy points, making him the ninth best player to have during the week. That he did this against the Ravens raised the value, and shows what he might do against the Rams next week. It was also a great follow-up to what he did against the Dallas Cowboys when he rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown in Week 9.

Now Lynch gets to play against the worst run defense in the NFL during Week 11 action. The Rams give up 150.6 rushing yards per game, making even the average running backs look great this season. It really looks like Lynch is ready to have another game of between 125-150 yards, and that he could also put the ball in the end zone a number of times. The weak defensive line could allow Lynch to escape out into the flats as well, giving him the chance to help out quarterback Tarvaris Jackson(notes) with a high number of receiving yards.

Lynch has definitely turned the corner this season, and if the early season injuries are finally behind him, he is going to become one of the more valuable fantasy football running backs. It’s almost a crime that he is still available in so many fantasy football leagues out there, but that probably won’t last long when people realize how good he has played lately.

If Lynch is still on your waiver wire, then you need to go out and grab him, even if you are confident in the top two running backs on your roster. Injuries happen, and the trade value for Lynch is just going to increase in the coming weeks. For those that get the opportunity to play him, get ready for a nice week of stats.

It’s still not entirely clear whether St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford will be available for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, but it’s becoming less likely each day. Bradford is still battling the high ankle injury that he suffered a couple weeks ago, and he missed practice on Wednesday while recovering from the injury.

On Monday, Bradford’s status was described as questionable by Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo, , but it appears that we can downgrade his status to doubtful at this point given the lack of progress on his ankle. Bradford missed last Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys due the injury, and while A.J. Feeley was competent in his place, it’s pretty clear that the Rams miss their star player.

Bradford’s status for Sunday will presumably be a last-minute decision as the team hopes for an unexpectedly quick recovery, but it seems likely that Feeley will be behind center for the Rams on Sunday. This season has quickly become a lost cause for St. Louis, but getting Bradford back and healthy is paramount for the team’s long-term success.

Oct 25, 2011 – After another horrible showing, this time against surprise record-setter DeMarco Murray and the Dallas Cowboys, the St. Louis Rams remain one of the NFL’s worst teams. As SB Nation Rams blog Turf Show Times noted:

Murray topped Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith’s single-game rushing record for the Dallas Cowboys. Smith ran for 237 yards back in 1993.

Murray set another record against, one for the Rams. His 91-yard touchdown was the longest ever allowed by the Rams, in the history of a franchise that dates back to 1937.

Was that enough to knock the Rams down in the NFL rankings? Nope. Joel Thorman’s SB Nation Week 8 power rankings still have the Rams firmly planted at number 30 overall. Without Sam Bradford in the lineup, it can’t be said that the Rams did much to warrant any move up, but it will be interesting to see if Bradford and recent acquisition Brandon Lloyd can jump start a sputtering offense. Hey, at least the Indianapolis Colts and the Miami Dolphins have kept the Rams out of the cellar, right?

The Dallas Cowboys are only allowing 307 yards per game (5th in the NFL). They allow 69.6 yards per game rushing (1st in the NFL), giving up a paltry 3.3 yards per carry.

What I’m trying to say is, the Cowboys are hard to run on.

The St. Louis Rams average 97.6 rushing yards per game (23rd in the NFL), mustering an average of 4.4 yards per carry. Of course, Steven Jackson missed most of the first three games, so that average would be a lot higher with Jackson healthy and running hard. On the season, Jackson is averaging a robust 5.4 yards per carry.

Sunday in Dallas, something has to give.

I don’t think Jackson is going to go crazy and run the ball 25 times for 160 yards like he did against the Cowboys back in 2008 when the Rams upset Dallas. It’s possible, but I don’t think that kind of lightning is going to strike twice.

I think Jackson will hurt the Cowboys catching the football.

Jackson had 90 catches in a season as a younger player. He has great hands, but hasn’t been properly used as a receiver in years. Last weekend, you saw Jackson make an amazing catch down the sideline. If the Rams are smart, they will use Jackson as a receiver, and this will keep the Cowboys’ blitzing linebackers in check.

If Jackson has a couple of big gains on a screen pass, a little flare out of the backfield, and then averages around four yards per carry on 21 carries…

Add it all up, and I think Jackson is going to have over 150 total yards and at least one touchdown.

Read More: A.J. Feeley (QB – STL), Sam Bradford (QB – STL), Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Rams, St. Louis Rams at Dallas Cowboys, Oct 23, 2011 4:15 PM EDT

The injury to Sam Bradford that occurred last week in the St. Louis Rams game against the Green Bay Packers was diagnosed as the dreaded high ankle sprain. “Dreaded” because it’s difficult to put a timetable on recovery for that sort of injury, but it’s been determined that the Rams quarterback will at least miss Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys as A.J. Feeley gets a spot start.

Bradford was ruled out on Saturday, as first reported by FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer and later confirmed by the team. Feeley’s start isn’t surprising as he took all of the first-team practice reps on Thursday despite the fact that Bradford originally expected to start against the Cowboys.

Missing this Sunday’s game probably isn’t any sort of indicator regarding Bradford’s injury status going forward as high ankle sprains are notoriously difficult to diagnose. For now, though, Feeley will be under center. Prior to last week’s game, Feeley hadn’t appeared in a regular season game since 2007 with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Dallas Cowboys look to end a two-game losing streak when the host the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

The Rams have yet to win a game all season, but that doesn’t mean they don’t stand a chance against the Cowboys.

Both teams are in desperate need of a victory, which definitely makes this an intriguing matchup. Should the Cowboys lose, they will certainly face a lot more scrutiny than if the Rams lose another game.

With that said, let’s take a look at some specifics of this NFC showdown.

When: Sunday, Oct. 23 at 4:15 p.m. ET

Where: Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, TX

Watch: FOX

St. Louis

Spread

The Cowboys are favored at -13, which is too high for my liking. The Rams aren’t a bad team, but they’ve been plagued by injuries and a very tough schedule. Even though St. Louis has lost ATS all season, I like the Rams here because I think the Cowboys will find a way to screw it up.

Over/Under

The over/under is set at 43.5, and both teams are talented enough to put up a good amount of points, so take the over. Each team has great playmakers, which is why I believe they will go over.

Key Injuries

For the Rams, QB Sam Bradford (ankle) remains a game-time decision, but cornerback Brian Jackson (knee) and defensive end C.J. Ah You (wrist) are out for Sunday.

For the Cowboys, running back Felix Jones (ankle) is out, and linebacker DeMarcus Ware (back) is questionable.

Fantasy Big Plays

Tony Romo and both Dez Bryant and Miles Austin are must-starts on the Cowboys side. The Rams defense may be 10th in the league against the pass, but the Cowboys are still going to put up great passing numbers, especially since their best running back is out.

For the Rams, I would sit Bradford, but do start Steven Jackson. While the Cowboys have the No. 1 rushing defense and will be gunning for Jackson, he’s still one of the top backs in the league. The Rams are counting on him to deliver, and he will find the end zone on Sunday.

Keys to St. Louis Win

The Rams really need Bradford to play, but if he doesn’t, the key to winning is to block well for Jackson.

Another key is for the defense to step up big time. They’re near the bottom of the league against the run, as well as getting pressure on the QB. That has to change on Sunday if they want to win because to beat the Cowboys, you have to frustrate Romo and create turnovers.

Keys to Dallas Win

The Cowboys cannot turn the ball over or it’s going to be a long day. Too often they have shot themselves in the foot this season, and should it happen on Sunday then Dallas could very well lose this game.

Even though Felix Jones is out, the Cowboys need to establish the run game with DeMarco Murray and Tashard Choice. It will open up the pass and create those big plays that fans love to see so much.

No

Prediction

The Rams will struggle in the early going, especially if Bradford doesn’t play. But after they force a couple turnovers, they will make it a competitive game. The addition of Brandon Lloyd will prove to be a big one, as he will help the Rams keep this game close.

However, in the end the Cowboys will prevail. They have the better defense, and that will prove to be the difference-maker on Sunday. The Rams will prevent Dallas from covering, but they just don’t have enough to get their first win of the season.

Cowboys 30, Rams 21

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Rams are optimistic Steven Jackson will have a larger workload this weekend when they host the Washington Redskins.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Rams are optimistic Steven Jackson will have a larger workload this weekend when they host the Washington Redskins.

Jackson has been hobbled by a strained quadriceps muscle. He was hurt on the Rams‘ first play of the season against Philadelphia.

The Rams‘ captain scored a touchdown on that 47-yard run, but he pulled up as he crossed the goal line. He had one more carry in that game — for nine yards — and didn’t play in the second game against the Giants.

Jackson saw limited time against the Ravens, who left St. Louis with a 37-7 victory that kept the Rams winless. He carried the ball just four times for 23 yards.

Jackson has been limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday. However, his presence on the practice field shows he is making progress.

“I’ve been able to practice all week, so that’s having things go in the right direction,” Jackson said. “I’ll be out there on Sunday.”

Umenyiora ready to play; Tuck’s status unknown

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — With two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Justin Tuck battling a groin issue and a persistent neck injury, Osi Umenyiora could not have picked a better time to get back into the New York Giants‘ lineup.

Umenyiora, 29, who tied an NFL record with 10 forced fumbles last season, practiced on a limited basis for the second straight day Thursday, and it appears the two-time Pro Bowler will play for the first time this season when the Giants visit Arizona.

Tuck has missed practice the past two days. He does not know if he will be cleared to work Friday, but he insisted that if he boards to plane for the flight to Phoenix on Saturday, he will play in the game.

Vikings assessing McNabb’s throwing mechanics

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings have been evaluating Donovan McNabb’s mechanics this week, a response to some inaccuracy issues that have bogged down the 34-year-old and the Minnesota offense.

McNabb has only one turnover, an interception on his first play from scrimmage off a batted pass at the line, through three games. His predecessor, Brett Favre, had seven by this point last season. But several of McNabb’s throws have been uncatchable, either one-hoppers that landed well short of receivers or air balls that sailed over the heads of his targets. He ranks 26th in the league with a 78.1 passer rating, and his completion percentage is only 58.

Romo says he’s mending as Cowboys await Lions

IRVING, Texas — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is enjoying his two weeks of reputation rehab after back-to-back wins.

The St. Louis Rams could benefit from a long lockout

The St. Louis Rams could benefit from a long lockout. No one has made that prediction yet.

All we’ve heard regarding the St. Louis Rams and the lockout is how they will suffer, mainly due to Josh McDaniels’ new offense that the players need to learn, and the fact that they have a second year quarterback (Sam Bradford) who is still developing.

Both points are very true, could certainly prove to be harmful for the team.

Not every team in the NFL is learning a new offense like the Rams, but every team will be missing the same amount of practices and training camp, so they are not at a disadvantage in that sense.

We don’t know how quickly the players will learn the offense, but we do know that the Rams play three very intimidating opponents to start the season.

They open the season in St. Louis against the Philadelphia Eagles, who have a potent aerial attack that could expose the Rams’ weak secondary.

The Week 2 game has the Rams facing off against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football at the Meadowlands. The Giants have a fierce defensive line an offense that can get it done on the ground or in the air.

Then the Rams go back to St. Louis to play their third consecutive difficult game, this time against the Baltimore Ravens, who have a notorious defense that could completely shut down the Rams’ offense.

If the NFL lockout lasts several games into the season, it’s hard to believe that the Rams would not benefit from skipping one (or all) of their first three games.

Of course the fans would be losing by missing out on those games—and some of the players would certainly struggle to grasp the new offense in a short period of time—but if the ultimate goal is to make the playoffs and secure a higher seed with the best possible record, missing the first couple games could be beneficial.

Here is what the 2011 schedule would look like if they missed the first three games:

1. Vs. Washington Redskins 12:00 PM

2. @ Green Bay Packers 12:00 PM

3. @ Dallas Cowboys 3:15 PM

4. Vs. New Orleans Saints 12:00 PM

5. @ Arizona Cardinals 3:15 PM

6. @ Cleveland Browns 12:00 PM

7. Vs. Seattle Seahawks 3:05 PM

8. Vs. Arizona Cardinals 12:00 PM

9. @ San Francisco 49ers 3:15 PM

10. @ Seattle Seahawks Mon. 7:30 PM

11. Vs. Cincinnati Bengals 12:00 PM

12. @ Pittsburgh Steelers 12:00 PM

13. Vs. San Francisco 49ers 12:00 PM

The St. Louis Rams stand out among ascending teams that finished last season with losing records.

They made a six-game jump to 7-9 and came within one victory of a postseason berth.

Are they more likely than the Dallas Cowboys and other 2010 also-rans to break through with a postseason berth in 2011?

ESPN’s John Clayton and I considered the matter in our recent Hot Button discussion. He took the Cowboys. I took the Rams. We both painted reasonable pictures, I thought.

The Seattle Seahawks missed the cut because they won the division and won a playoff game, putting them in position to fall off even if they remain on their intended track from a long-term planning perspective.

And what about the San Francisco 49ers? They’ve won plenty of offseason championships over the past few years. Perhaps a break from inflated expectations will do them good.

From a perception standpoint, drafting Colin Kaepernick 36th overall gave the 49ers a long-range outlook that didn’t exist when the team was making shorter-term bets on Alex Smith. It’s also plausible to think an extended lockout might hurt the 49ers in particular as they implement new schemes on offense, defense and special teams.

The 49ers did join the Rams in getting support during a recent “NFL Live.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.
