St. Louis Rams NFL Free Agency: Rams Sign Colts…

The St. Louis Rams have agreed to terms with offensive tackle/guard Quinn Ojinnaka, most recently of the Indianapolis Colts, according to a tweet by Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

The 27-year-old Ojinnaka was most likely added for depth purposes to a thin offensive line. Ojinnaka also brings versatility to St. Louis, as he has started at left tackle, right tackle and right guard in the past.

And it is that flexibility and experience at playing multiple positions that was probably of greatest appeal to the Rams.

St. Louis Rams Will Trade No. 2 Pick

The St. Louis Rams will trade the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. A Rams trade might not come until the draft gets closer, but league sources revealed on Monday (Feb. 27) that a deal is definitely coming. This appears like the first move for the Rams to find out which suitors are serious about trading up to draft Robert Griffin III out of Baylor. Those same sources state that the Rams have had early trade discussions with the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins.

The Rams have the quarterback they are happy with in Sam Bradford, who suffered through some injuries in the 2011 NFL season that hurt the Rams quite a bit. He was the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, giving the Rams a young quarterback for many years to come. Knowing that Griffin should become the No. 2 pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the franchise is making a calculated move to trade out of the spot and load up on potential assets.

This is going to become a huge story to follow in the NFL, especially as rumors start to grow about which teams have the lead to acquire that No. 2 pick. It certainly makes it easier to figure out the draft board if Andrew Luck and Griffin come off the board in the first two picks, but there are a number of teams that could really use a “fix” at the quarterback position. The losers in the battle for Griffin may end up becoming the top suitors for Peyton Manning if the Indianapolis Colts decide to part ways with the future hall of famer.

Which team do you think has the best chance to complete a trade with the St. Louis Rams to draft Robert Griffin III? What should the Rams look for in a trading partner that can help fix that roster?

NFL draft 2012: St. Louis Rams confirm they are…

The St. Louis Rams are willing to trade the second overall pick of the April draft.

Chief operating officer Kevin Demoff said Tuesday that the team would make a deal under the right circumstances, but has not made any commitments despite a report late Monday that a trade had already been decided. He said new coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead went to the NFL combine with an open mind.

“I think coach Fisher and Les have been upfront that we will listen to offers for the (hash)2 pick,” Demoff said in an email to The Associated Press. “I didn’t see anything in the report that differed from their statements.”

Quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are expected to go 1-2 in the draft, with Indianapolis holding the top pick. The Rams need plenty of help but are set at quarterback with Sam Bradford, the first overall pick in 2010.

(A Starting Blocks poll asking if you’d rather the Browns have a chance to draft Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III if they make a trade with the Rams; or, if you’d rather the Browns not make that trade)

Among a group of perhaps 50 or 60 players that the Rams are believed to have interviewed at the combine are Southern California offensive tackle Matt Kalil and Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon, a pair who would fill obvious holes.

While the Colts are widely expected to take Luck as the eventual heir to Peyton Manning, it is Griffin who has sparked the speculation. Last year’s Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor is seen as a good fit with a number of teams, increasing the likelihood of the Rams dealing the second pick in a bid to stock up.

But the draft is still two months away and free agency has not begun.

Fisher, hired in January, has consistently maintained he has a high regard for Bradford and believes he can become a star. Fisher dismissed last season’s performance to a large extent because of injuries to Bradford and his offensive line, plus a time shortage getting accustomed to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ system because of the lockout.

Bradford missed six games with a high left ankle sprain playing behind an injury riddled line. Tackles Rodger Saffold and Jason Smith, and guard Jacob Bell ended the season on injured reserve.

The defense also needs help after threatening the franchise record for yards allowed.

Fisher and Snead were hired after the Rams’ 2-14 season tied for the NFL’s worst. They were just 10-38 in three seasons under coach Steve Spagnuolo, who was fired along with general manager Billy Devaney. McDaniels is also gone.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

St. Louis Rams Draft Order 2012: Why the Rams Hold…

As things stand right now, the Indianapolis Colts appear set to select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the top pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

At this point that much appears inevitable.

That makes the St. Louis Rams the ultimate power players in this year’s draft because they hold the No. 2 pick and should have plenty of options.

The Rams finished 2-14 this season, so they could obviously use help all over their roster. That leads me to believe they will be pushing hard to trade the second overall selection in order to move down and bring back a wealth of players and picks in return.

More picks mean the ability to rebuild the team faster around franchise quarterback Sam Bradford.

There is sure to be interest from quarterback-needy teams who would want to move up in order to select Baylor’s Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick.

The Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins all have big question marks at the quarterback and will probably at least explore the opportunity to move up to take RG3.

That said, if St. Louis doesn’t get a deal they like, there are solid options available.

The Rams need help at receiver, and Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon has the talent to profile as a Pro Bowl-caliber wideout.

St. Louis also appears ready to end the Jason Smith experiment at tackle, and while Rodger Saffold has done a nice job holding down the left side, USC’s Matt Kalil profiles as a future All-Pro blind side protector.

The best part about the Rams’ situation is that they don’t need to trade down, but the option will certainly be there. That means that if a potential trade partner low-balls them, they can just hold on to the pick and get better by adding an extremely talented player.

Right now St. Louis is sitting pretty at No. 2 and should have plenty of options available as the draft approaches.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Spagnuolo fired as Rams head coach

Listen

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 2 (UPI) — Steve Spagnuolo was fired Monday as coach of the St. Louis Rams, who finished the 2011 season tied with Indianapolis for the worst record in the NFL.

St. Louis fell 34-27 Sunday to the San Francisco 49ers, a loss that left the Rams 2-14.

Although they had the same league-worst record as the Colts, the Rams will have the second overall selection in the 2012 NFL draft.

The Rams also fired General Manager Billy Devaney.

“I would like to personally thank Steve and Billy for their dedication to the St. Louis Rams organization over the past several seasons,” Rams owner Stan Kroenke said in a statement. “This was a difficult decision for many reasons. We have tremendous respect for Steve and Billy as people and football professionals.”

St. Louis was 10-38 in three seasons with Spagnuolo as coach. The Rams went 1-15 his first year and were 7-9 in 2010 before slipping back this season, which started with six consecutive losses.

There is the quick update of the day.

St. Louis Rams 2011 Fantasy Football Stars:…

The 2011 St. Louis Rams weren’t playing for a division title this season; they were playing for a chance at Andrew Luck. With a 2-14 record, they were close, but the Peyton Manning-less Indianapolis Colts will get that pick instead. The Rams may have been one of the worst teams in terms of producing fantasy points this season, but did see a couple players succeed. Who are the biggest surprise and disappointments, and which star can say they were the Rams 2011 fantasy MVP?

MVP – Steven Jackson

Jackson didn’t have the best season of his career, but he surpassed 1,000 yards for the seventh straight season. He finished the campaign with 1,145 yards and five touchdowns, while also adding 42 catches for 333 yards and an additional score. Jackson will continue to be a late first or early second round selection next season, but would benefit greatly from a more stabilized offensive system.

Biggest Surprise – Brandon Lloyd

When the Denver Broncos traded one of the best wide receivers from 2010, fantasy GMs had to wonder what was wrong. He averaged nearly five catches a game during the four games he was a Bronco this season, but failed to reach the end zone. In 11 games as a Ram, Lloyd made 51 catches for 683 yards with five touchdowns, becoming one of the top-two fantasy threats for the Rams.

Biggest Disappointment – Sam Bradford

The second year quarterback was expected to make the Rams contenders in the normally weak NFC West, but after playing in just 10 games this season, there had to be serious discussion about drafting Luck if they got the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. After putting up more than 3,500 yards with 18 touchdowns, Bradford regressed in 2011, throwing for 2,164 yards and six touchdowns. There are going to be a couple of top quarterbacks in the draft that could pose a problem to Bradford ever becoming a star in the NFL. If the Rams can’t get Luck, maybe Robert Griffin III could be a solid fit for St. Louis.

Sam Bradford Unlikely for Final Game: Injury…

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is doubtful for the regular season finale against the San Francisco 49ers. Bradford has missed five games with a high ankle sprain. Bradford is actually in an interesting position. If he plays and helps his team win, he might actually save his job. If the Rams lose, they might wind up with the top pick in the draft. That means the team is likely to draft Andrew Luck and jettison Bradford. But as much as Bradford might want to play, the likelihood is that he will be on the sidelines once again.

Bradford has not returned to practice with the Rams in the week leading up to the Week 17 contest against the San Francisco 49ers. He was hoping to push toward playing but with the game just a few days away, the chances are slim to none. Bradford has been battling the ankle injury for much of the season. The five games he missed haven’t come in succession. Bradford missed Week 6 and Week 7 but returned. He aggravated the injury again and missed more time. He last played on December 12 when the Rams faced the Seattle Seahawks. Given the nagging nature of his injury, it seems all but certain that the Rams will sit him in the final game. That means that veteran Kellen Clemens will start once again for the lowly Rams.

Bradford had a nice rookie season in 2010 but he has been a disaster in 2011. He has just six touchdown passes on the season. The Rams have the worst scoring offense in the NFL and the prevailing thought is that the team will go in a new direction. Just two years after Bradford was selected first overall in 2010, he could be out of a job if the Rams select Luck with the top pick. St. Louis will get the top pick if they lose and the Indianapolis Colts win. If that happens, the team will certainly move Bradford. Even if the Rams earn the second pick, there is a chance that a new coaching staff could move the quarterback. 2011 has been a cruel year for Bradford on the football field. It looks like he won’t get a shot at redeeming himself in the final game.

2012 NFL Draft: Why St. Louis Rams Would Benefit…

Most of the talk for the past several weeks has centered on the Indianapolis Colts getting the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft. The St. Louis Rams are suddenly in the running, however, and I believe they need the pick more than anyone at this point.

The Colts have won two consecutive games, and if they can defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17 and the Rams lose to the San Francisco 49ers, then St. Louis will leapfrog Indy for the top spot. This would open up a number of interesting scenarios.

Regardless of which team gets the top pick, it is almost a given that Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck will be the selection. There is uncertainty regarding whether Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will ever fully recover from his neck injury, but if he does, then Luck will be a wasted pick for a couple years.

Because of Manning’s condition I think the Colts would take Luck and keep him rather than trade him. If they get the No. 2 pick, though, then it will likely knock them out of the Luck sweepstakes and allow them to take a player who can help immediately like USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil.

If the Rams ended up with the No. 1 pick, however, they would have a myriad of options. The first thing they could do is to draft Luck and keep him. This would be a bit of a shocking move as the drafted quarterback Sam Bradford first overall a couple years ago, but it comes down to which player the front office prefers.

This would result in the Rams trading Bradford and likely getting a nice return since he has only been in the league for two years. Bradford took a step back in his second season as a professional, but much of that had to do with terrible offensive line play and subsequent injuries he suffered.

If the Rams are happy with Bradford, then drafting Luck and immediately trading him is a possibility. The San Diego Chargers did something similar in the 2004 draft when they selected quarterback Eli Manning, but traded his rights to the New York Giants for the rights to quarterback Philip Rivers and picks that became linebacker Shawne Merriman and kicker Nate Kaeding.

Which team needs the No. 1 overall pick more?

Which team needs the No. 1 overall pick more?

  • St. Louis Rams

  • Indianapolis Colts

Failing that, the Rams could simply trade the pick to the highest bidder. For a team to move up even a couple spots to the No. 1 pick, it takes a king’s ransom. That means the Rams could get a fantastic complement of draft picks to fill the many holes they have on their team, particularly on the offensive line and on defense.

Ultimately, the Colts are a completely different team with Manning. While they may have been a two- or three-win team without Manning, they could just as easily win 10 games with the same supporting cast next season provided Manning is healthy.

The same can’t be said for the Rams, as they have deficiencies all over the place. I think trading the No. 1 overall pick would be a huge help for St. Louis, as it would give the Rams a bunch of picks to address their many needs.

While taking Luck first overall may be great for the Colts in the long run, no team more desperately needs that pick right now than the Rams.

NFL Power Rankings Week 17: ESPN Finally Drops St….

Read More: Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams are 2-13 and going nowhere fast, but then again, nobody thought they could drop any further with the Indianapolis Colts insulating them from the bottom of the barrel. Well, the Colts have ripped off two wins in a row and the Rams have now dropped six in a row, so the time has finally come where the Rams have punctuated their nightmare season with the most dubious distinction in the world of NFL Power Rankings. ESPN has released their rankings for Week 17, and the Rams have finally moved down the last spot to No. 32 overall:

32. St. Louis Rams (2-13, LW: 31) – The Rams rushed for 164 yards, committed no turnovers and still got shut out by the Steelers, 27-0. (Sando).

The only ray of hope for Rams fans is that the organization seems intent on moving forward from this by changing the guard, and GM A.J. Smith and former head coach Jon Gruden have been mentioned as possibilities for the team.

Latest loss puts Rams in running for No. 1 pick

James Hall goes for the strip and gets nothing. Donnie Jones needs 10 yards on a fake punt and gets 9.

Two big whiffs in another dispiriting loss Saturday that has put the lowly St. Louis Rams in the running for the No. 1 overall draft pick for the second time in three seasons.

The Rams (2-13) and Colts are tied for the NFL’s worst record heading into the final week of the season. St. Louis hosts NFC West champion San Francisco. If Indianapolis wins at Jacksonville (4-11) and the Rams drop their seventh in a row, St. Louis gets the top pick.

The season finale could also signal the end for coach Steve Spagnuolo, who is 10-37 in three years at the helm. The roster has been devastated by injuries, with the top four cornerbacks on injured reserve, three offensive linemen also out for the year and quarterback Sam Bradford missing five starts with a high left ankle sprain — but St. Louis played poorly when healthy, too.

The NFL’s worst offense has just 15 touchdowns, is averaging 11 points per game and ranks last in third-down efficiency. St. Louis needs nine points this week to match the meager total of 175 from Spagnuolo’s first season in 2009, a 1-15 campaign that led to Sam Bradford being drafted with the top pick

The defense is last against the run after yielding 169 yards and a 6-yard average per carry to Rashard Mendenhall and the Steelers in a 27-0 defeat Saturday.

St. Louis has the league’s worst kicker, too. Josh Brown is 19 for 26 on field goals and missed a chip shot 33-yarder against Pittsburgh.

Spagnuolo sounded hopeful on Monday, saying it would be nice to finish with a victory to give the franchise some momentum going into the offseason. The last time that happened was 2006, when St. Louis finished with three straight wins for an 8-8 record.

“There is something to winning the last game in my opinion, whether you’re moving on to the playoffs or not,” Spagnuolo said. “I think it carries you.

“One of the most rewarding things in this business is the locker room at the end of a win.”

Spagnuolo said owner Stan Kroenke had not given him an indication where he stood. A spokesman for Kroenke has not responded to repeated requests for comment by the AP.

“And those conversations wouldn’t happen anyway, so it’s nothing out of the ordinary,” Spagnuolo said. “That’s nothing different.”

Spagnuolo said he enjoyed spending time with his wife, Maria, on Christmas. He wouldn’t say if he also spent time at Rams Park searching for answers, jokingly issuing his first no-comment of the season.

Hall was poised to ride Charlie Batch to the turf and poke the ball loose on the Steelers’ second snap of the game, but tried to tackle Batch high. The quarterback ducked just in time, then got free for a 35-yard pass to Mendenhall that put the ball on the St. Louis 37. Instead of third-and-long, the Steelers ended up with a field goal.

With his team down 3-0 midway through the second quarter, Spagnuolo called for a fake punt and pass on fourth-and-10 from the Steelers 44. Jones took off after deciding no one was open and was tackled 1 yard shy of the first down.

Even though the Steelers didn’t score on the ensuing possession, it was a crucial setback for an offense starving for points. The Rams have been shut out two of the last four games, also losing 26-0 at San Francisco in Week 12.

Spagnuolo gave Brown a pass on the 52-yard attempt that was wide left to end the first half, but not the 33-yarder early in the fourth quarter. If Brown makes those two, the Rams are down just 13-6 and the game is up for grabs.

Spagnuolo elected not to give Brown a third try at the end of the game when the Rams were at the Pittsburgh 23, allowing the final 30 seconds to run out. Instead of playing to the finish, Spagnuolo handed the Steelers a shutout.

“I mean, the game was over,” Spagnuolo said. “That did not cross my mind.”

One positive heading into the finale is the injury list isn’t as bad as in recent weeks, aside from the loss of yet another cornerback. Justin King, who has missed the last two games with a shoulder injury, was ruled out for the finale and the team thinks he’ll need surgery.

The top four cornerbacks to open the season are out for the year, and a fifth potential heavy contributor, Jerome Murphy, was knocked out in the preseason. The Rams have compensated for all those losses by playing as many as four safeties at a time.

Spagnuolo said he hadn’t spoken with Bradford, who has insisted he wants to play whenever he’s able.

“We know we’re dealing with a competitive guy and all I can say is we’ll take it day by day and we’ll be smart with it,” Spagnuolo said.

What do you guys think about this.

Rams might need nuclear power blast to fix things

Some fans want the St. Louis Rams’ ownership to blow up the franchise and begin again with new front office personnel, coaches and players.

The way the 2-12 Rams have been playing, it’s a tempting thought. And perhaps dynamite the Edward Jones Dome while you are at it.

Just kidding — I think.

When you talk about the Rams, nothing seems safe. They’ve gone from disappointing to pointedly disturbing in a perplexing season marred by numerous injuries and various frustration factors.

The bottom line is they aren’t getting it done and that’s the most unacceptable point in what had the makings of a promising season. Remember, the Rams went 7-9 last year, but it was a six-game improvement over their 2009 season, when they won once.

And St. Louis was within a victory of making the 2010 playoffs. It came down to the final week when Seattle beat the Rams and entered the postseason as the NFC West champs at 7-9.

The West Division could be the worst one in the NFL and that’s another sticking point to the Rams’ Lost Season. San Francisco has improved tremendously since last season. Seattle and Arizona seemed mired with the Rams in mediocrity early in 2011, but both the Seahawks and Cardinals have found their mojo.

While the division-champion 49ers were 11-3 heading into weekend play, the Seahawks and Cardinals were 7-7. That’s a further indictment of the Rams, five games behind Seattle and Arizona. St. Louis is the only team in the West that has gotten progressively worse. The Rams could be battling Indianapolis and Minnesota for the No. 1 draft pick.

That’s serious stuff. The Rams are a mess now for a multitude of reasons and I don’t know if having the first, second or third draft choice will help them that much.

Maybe it’s time for owner Stan Kroenke to turn the dogs loose in ferreting out the underachievers and erasing the trouble spots and going in a different direction. But which trail should the Rams take?

They have a young quarterback to build around, but a receiving corps that’s slim to none. So unless they stockpile a load of quality receivers quickly, you’d think they could prop up their running game first.

Steven Jackson’s still around, though he’s not getting any younger or more durable with a shaky and oft-injured offensive line in front of him. Thus unless the Rams devise a way to boost their woebegone offense, they are back where they started.

It’s a team that can’t pass or run effectively, and those teams rarely win in the NFL. Or they win two of their first 14 games.

I could be wrong about this, but I don’t think a quick fix or cosmetic makeover is going to turn the Rams into a beauty of a franchise. It’s going to take some deep soul-searching and deciding upon a plan that makes the most sense in getting this team up to speed with at least their West Division competitors.

It’s called an identity and right now the Rams have none. Their defense is credible, but they can’t rely on any one phase of their team to supply them with a win.

Saddled with an identity crisis, the Rams prove to be just good enough to lose.

Thus, rolling hand grenades through the front office, coaches’ quarters and locker room may be necessary. But if the Rams go thermonuclear, they should just be careful what they wish for — there’s always unwanted fallout.

On the other hand, it surely can’t get worse than it has been this season. The 1-15 campaign two years ago wasn’t this aggravating.

NFL Power Rankings Week 16: ESPN Panel Keeps Rams…

Read More: Kellen Clemens (QB – STL), Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams

Experts from around the web are reacting to what took place during Week 15 in the NFL, and the five-man ESPN panel has fallen in line with every other site by keeping the St. Louis Rams at No. 31 overall. The team has been the lowest ranked team in the NFC for weeks now, and after the last-place Indianapolis Colts earned their first win in Week 15 only one game separates the Rams from the distinction of worst team in the NFL. Not the same intrigue a playoff push brings, but for those interested in the NFL Draft it is certainly something to watch. Here is what Mike Sando offered to explain the Rams’ ranking:

31. St. Louis Rams (2-12, LW: 31) Kellen Clemens posted the Rams’ highest single-game NFL passer rating of the season Sunday. (Sando)

The rest of the NFC West breaks down like this: the San Francisco 49ers jumped up three spots to No. 3 after their impressive Monday Night win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, while the Seattle Seahawks rose five spots to No. 15 and the Arizona Cardinals slid up two slots to No. 17.
