The 2011 St. Louis Rams weren't playing for a division title this season; they were playing for a chance at Andrew Luck

The 2011 St. Louis Rams weren’t playing for a division title this season; they were playing for a chance at Andrew Luck. With a 2-14 record, they were close, but the Peyton Manning-less Indianapolis Colts will get that pick instead. The Rams may have been one of the worst teams in terms of producing fantasy points this season, but did see a couple players succeed. Who are the biggest surprise and disappointments, and which star can say they were the Rams 2011 fantasy MVP?

MVP – Steven Jackson

Jackson didn’t have the best season of his career, but he surpassed 1,000 yards for the seventh straight season. He finished the campaign with 1,145 yards and five touchdowns, while also adding 42 catches for 333 yards and an additional score. Jackson will continue to be a late first or early second round selection next season, but would benefit greatly from a more stabilized offensive system.

Biggest Surprise – Brandon Lloyd

When the Denver Broncos traded one of the best wide receivers from 2010, fantasy GMs had to wonder what was wrong. He averaged nearly five catches a game during the four games he was a Bronco this season, but failed to reach the end zone. In 11 games as a Ram, Lloyd made 51 catches for 683 yards with five touchdowns, becoming one of the top-two fantasy threats for the Rams.

Biggest Disappointment – Sam Bradford

The second year quarterback was expected to make the Rams contenders in the normally weak NFC West, but after playing in just 10 games this season, there had to be serious discussion about drafting Luck if they got the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. After putting up more than 3,500 yards with 18 touchdowns, Bradford regressed in 2011, throwing for 2,164 yards and six touchdowns. There are going to be a couple of top quarterbacks in the draft that could pose a problem to Bradford ever becoming a star in the NFL. If the Rams can’t get Luck, maybe Robert Griffin III could be a solid fit for St. Louis.

According to a post-game report today by cbssports.com, St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo says the Rams have:

“character and fight…to build anything, the base has to have a rock-solid foundation and that’s there,” he said. “We’ve got to wait eight months to play a game, but I’m glad that’s there.”

The question in St. Louis right now is who will be the head coach for that game in eight months?

That decision is expected to be announced on Monday, according to a report by Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, who cites league sources.

In three seasons under Steve Spagnuolo, the Rams went 10-38.

Hopes were high in St. Louis entering 2011.

Many picked the Rams to win the NFC West. Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network asserted that St. Louis would be the league’s breakout team.

However, the Rams faltered during an 0-6 start before winning two of three, including the season’s biggest win, an upset victory at the Edward Jones Dome over record-setting Drew Brees and the playoff-bound New Orleans Saints.

But then they lost their final seven contests, including the finale today at home versus NFC West champion San Francisco.

In Spagnuolo’s defense, however, the Rams players never seemed to quit and the roster was ravaged by injuries throughout the year.

B: No

Some notable players lost for the season include Sam Bradford’s top receiving target, Danny Amendola (as well as rookie Greg Salas), the teams’ top three cornerbacks (Ron Bartell, Bradley Fletcher and Jerome Murphy) and both starting offensive tackles (Rodger Saffold, Jason Smith)—among others.

The team also lost three-time Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson for several games before suffering long-term injuries to quarterbacks Sam Bradford and A.J. Feeley.

With that said, 2-14 is still 2-14. And 10-38 is still 10-38.

In the NFL, it’s the bottom line that counts. And the bottom line doesn’t look good for Spagnuolo’s Rams. Expect him to be relieved of his head coaching duties as early as Monday.

According to a report by Albert Breer of the NFL Network, Jeff Fisher is ready to return to coaching. The St. Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers are listed as possible options for Fisher.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — If Chris Long gets a sack in the St. Louis Rams’ finale Sunday, he will top the best season ever put together by his Hall of Fame father

ST. LOUIS (AP) — If Chris Long gets a sack in the St. Louis Rams’ finale Sunday, he will top the best season ever put together by his Hall of Fame father.

In his mind, he’ll still be playing catch-up.

Chris Long has 13 sacks, tied with Howie Long’s personal-best total from 1983. The younger Long points out dad played most of his career as a tackle in a 3-4 defense. That made it a lot tougher to rush the passer, so to measure up Chris Long guessed he would need 22 sacks to earn some family bragging rights.

Long said he is happy to be enjoying his best year, despite the Rams’ struggles. St. Louis (2-13) hosts San Francisco (12-3) this weekend to wrap up a disappointing season.

He’s not interested in a competition anyway.

“Let’s be real,” Long said. “I don’t really look to compete with my pops. I don’t know what he did that year but he had to fight a lot of double teams, so it’s pretty remarkable.”

Howie Long totaled 84 sacks in a 13-year career with the Raiders and had three straight years in double digits from 1983-85. The 51-year-old Long, now an analyst with Fox Sports, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000.

Chris Long’s total this season is sixth in the NFL and he’s come on strong with 10 sacks in the last nine games, even while nursing a high left ankle sprain that kept him out of most practices for several weeks but never held him back on game day. He also has 13 quarterback hits.

Long has been on the field more this week and said the ankle has “gotten a ton better.”

“It takes time to heal and they’ve given me that time by cutting down my reps a lot,” Long said. “I feel like it’s paid off a lot.”

So yes, he’s happy with the progress he’s made. He’s built on the sack total each year, getting four in ’08, five in ’09 and 8.5 last season.

“Individually, I’d say I’m proud of my effort and what I’ve put into it,” he said. “I’m not disappointed in myself, I feel like I’ve worked hard and I’ll continue to work hard.”

Long’s realistic about where he stands among pass rushers. There’s no disappointment he was passed over in Pro Bowl balloting, although he, running back Steven Jackson and middle linebacker James Laurinaitis were picks as alternates. Expectations for the announcement were so low for Long he was at the movies enjoying “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” when he began to get texts offering condolences.

He has no quibble with those picked ahead of him. Minnesota’s Jared Allen and Philadelphia’s Jason Babin are starters and the Giants’ Jason Pierre-Paul is a reserve.

“If you’d asked me to pick the Pro Bowl, I would have picked it that way,” Long said. “I don’t think I’m one of the top three defensive ends or that I had one of the top three defensive end years in the NFC, so I think it’s fair. What happened is what’s supposed to happen. I think there are three awesome players there.”

A better season for the Rams no doubt would have raised his standing. If they finish with a loss against the NFC West champion 49ers and the Colts win at Jacksonville, the Rams would get the No. 1 draft pick for the second time in three years, plus they won only two games in Long’s rookie year.

So he’d take more wins over recognition.

“I mean, it’s been really frustrating. To have two wins at this point in the season, it’s unacceptable,” Long said. “There’s no way around that. We haven’t played to our potential and I guess we have only one more game to show what our potential is.”

Some fans want the St. Louis Rams’ ownership to blow up the franchise and begin again with new front office personnel, coaches and players.

The way the 2-12 Rams have been playing, it’s a tempting thought. And perhaps dynamite the Edward Jones Dome while you are at it.

Just kidding — I think.

When you talk about the Rams, nothing seems safe. They’ve gone from disappointing to pointedly disturbing in a perplexing season marred by numerous injuries and various frustration factors.

The bottom line is they aren’t getting it done and that’s the most unacceptable point in what had the makings of a promising season. Remember, the Rams went 7-9 last year, but it was a six-game improvement over their 2009 season, when they won once.

And St. Louis was within a victory of making the 2010 playoffs. It came down to the final week when Seattle beat the Rams and entered the postseason as the NFC West champs at 7-9.

The West Division could be the worst one in the NFL and that’s another sticking point to the Rams’ Lost Season. San Francisco has improved tremendously since last season. Seattle and Arizona seemed mired with the Rams in mediocrity early in 2011, but both the Seahawks and Cardinals have found their mojo.

While the division-champion 49ers were 11-3 heading into weekend play, the Seahawks and Cardinals were 7-7. That’s a further indictment of the Rams, five games behind Seattle and Arizona. St. Louis is the only team in the West that has gotten progressively worse. The Rams could be battling Indianapolis and Minnesota for the No. 1 draft pick.

That’s serious stuff. The Rams are a mess now for a multitude of reasons and I don’t know if having the first, second or third draft choice will help them that much.

Maybe it’s time for owner Stan Kroenke to turn the dogs loose in ferreting out the underachievers and erasing the trouble spots and going in a different direction. But which trail should the Rams take?

They have a young quarterback to build around, but a receiving corps that’s slim to none. So unless they stockpile a load of quality receivers quickly, you’d think they could prop up their running game first.

Steven Jackson’s still around, though he’s not getting any younger or more durable with a shaky and oft-injured offensive line in front of him. Thus unless the Rams devise a way to boost their woebegone offense, they are back where they started.

It’s a team that can’t pass or run effectively, and those teams rarely win in the NFL. Or they win two of their first 14 games.

I could be wrong about this, but I don’t think a quick fix or cosmetic makeover is going to turn the Rams into a beauty of a franchise. It’s going to take some deep soul-searching and deciding upon a plan that makes the most sense in getting this team up to speed with at least their West Division competitors.

It’s called an identity and right now the Rams have none. Their defense is credible, but they can’t rely on any one phase of their team to supply them with a win.

Saddled with an identity crisis, the Rams prove to be just good enough to lose.

Thus, rolling hand grenades through the front office, coaches’ quarters and locker room may be necessary. But if the Rams go thermonuclear, they should just be careful what they wish for — there’s always unwanted fallout.

On the other hand, it surely can’t get worse than it has been this season. The 1-15 campaign two years ago wasn’t this aggravating.

The St. Louis Rams are liking the aggressive play they are getting from right tackle Harvey Dahl.

Even it sometimes comes at a price.

Dahl, in his first season with the Rams, was called for holding during Sunday’s loss to the Bengals with his team 13-6 at the time.

He got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, too, perhaps because he used a profanity that was picked up on the microphone of referee Jerome Boger. It was just a matter of time before the play — with the audio — wound up on YouTube.

Dahl said the incident was atypical for him although he is known for his physical style of play. And the Rams (2-12) need every spark they can get this season with a visit to Pittsburgh (10-4) on Saturday up next.

“I learned a lesson. You can’t say anything to the refs. That’s my fault,” Dahl said Thursday. “That was frustration there. I made a bad situation worse. Obviously, you’ve got to stay composed there. I hurt my team. I didn’t know the microphone was on.”

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo did not delve into the correctness of the call on Dahl.

“I’m going to have to give it the old, ‘No comment,’” Spagnuolo said.

Dahl has had a solid season. He started the first 11 games at right guard before sliding over to right tackle the last four weeks. He started 43 games at right guard for Atlanta before coming to St. Louis.

The Rams have gotten what they wanted this year from Dahl, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said.

“When we got Harvey, we thought we were going to get a guy that was going to add some toughness,” McDaniels said. “He’s a great worker. He’s a great example for what we want our young guys to see. He’s been so unselfish with his role and what we’ve asked of him this year that I couldn’t say enough good things about him. (I’m) real glad to have him on our football team.”

Running back Steven Jackson agreed.

“He brings that attitude, that edge that you want upfront out of your guys,” Jackson said. “He’s pretty athletic and versatile that he can play two positions. You can see why he was really sought after in free agency.”

Dahl moved to tackle when Jason Smith suffered a concussion against Dallas.

“It’s a challenge,” Dahl said of the move. “It’s different technique. I feel like it’s going all right. I think it’s working out well. To help out and doing what the team needs is important. They ran it by me and I was open to it.”

That versatility has caught Spagnuolo’s eye.

“It’s not easy to go from guard to tackle,” Spagnuolo said. “With some of the people you see out on the edge there, he’s going to be challenged again this week and yet I think he functions really well. That’s a credit to him. I’m sure glad we’ve got him and I like the kind of guy he is. He’s good for our football team and he’s been really key with all the injuries we’ve had to be able to put him out there at right tackle.”

While Dahl has played well at tackle, Spagnuolo said he hasn’t pondered making it permanent.

“I’m not sure I’ve even thought that way yet,” Spagnuolo said. “But I know one thing, it’s nice to have a guy that can do both. It really is, that’s good to have.”

Notes: QB Sam Bradford (ankle), A.J. Feeley (thumb), CB Justin King (shoulder) did not practice. Bradford remains doubtful for Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh. … CB Josh Gordy (abdomen) returned to practice.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

That’s how bad Bradford and Feeley have both been, and how crushing this season has been to our hopes: Clemens, performing exactly as a guy off the street should, was enough to warm our shivering hearts.

So thank you, Kellen Clemens—I am not here, like Brett Favre or Mark Sanchez, to bury you. Thank you for being the one Ram all season not named Steven Jackson or Brandon Lloyd to take your position on offense and then do exactly what we were expecting of you, no more and no less. Thank you for coming in as the backup quarterback and behaving approximately like a backup quarterback. In this insane season I needed a little something to believe in.

ST. LOUIS — This game played out in the same all-too-familiar way: The St. Louis Rams’ defense played well, but wore down in the second half and could no longer hold up an ineffective offense.

Cincinnati running backs Bernard Scott and Cedric Benson each ran for a touchdown in the second half as the Bengals beat the Rams 20-13 Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome.

“That’s just been the story all year,” Rams right tackle Harvey Dahl said. “The defense has played well, played physical. We just can’t get it all connected on offense.”

The Rams led 6-3 at halftime, but the Bengals scored 17 unanswered points in the second half.

Scott had a 1-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds left in the third quarter, while Benson had a 4-yard touchdown run with 9:14 left in the fourth quarter.

The Rams lost their fifth straight game. They dropped to 2-12 with two games left in the utterly disappointing 2011 season.

A season worth of frustration came pouring out in the form of penalties in the fourth quarter as the Rams were flagged six times in the final period.

“We knew going into this game that this officiating crew were amongst some of the higher ones at throwing penalties out there,” Rams running back Steven Jackson said. “We just didn’t play smart. We weren’t heady about situations. Where the emotion of a football player comes in (to play), you have to be able to control that. The Cincinnati Bengals did a better job than us when that happened.”

The Rams were called for 10 penalties for 109 yards.

Those penalties included two unnecessary roughness infractions on linebacker Chris Chamberlain and an sportsmanlike conduct penalty on offensive linemen Harvey Dahl.

“I’m proud of them for a good chunk of the game, but there was period there where I was disappointed in some of the undisciplined playing,” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said.

After being called for holding, Dahl drew the additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for yelling, “That’s not holding,” when referee Jerome Boger had his microphone turned on.

“That was a mistake,” Dahl said. “I shouldn’t have done that. You can’t make a bad situation worse obviously. I just have to stay composed there and not hurt my team. I didn’t know the microphone was on. My fault.”

Dahl was taken out of the game after the penalty. He received a lecture from Spagnuolo on the sideline before returning to action on the next offensive series.

“My education to Harvey was: ’You don’t talk to the officials,’ ” Spagnuolo said. “He has to be careful of that.”

The Rams got their lone touchdown on a 25-yard pass from Kellen Clemens to Danario Alexander with 1:08 left in the game.

The battle between two teams trending in different directions got off to an interesting start. Cincinnati is fighting for their playoff lives, while St. Louis is just trying build momentum heading into the offseason.

The Bengals opened the game with a nice drive, started by A.J. Green’s 55-yard reception and capped by a Mike Nugent field goal. St. Louis looked like they were going to answer with a field goal of their own, but instead Josh Brown pushed his attempt to the right.

We head into half with St. Louis leading 6-3.

Here are five telling stats from the first half that explain the half that was and what the Rams need to do in order to win this game.

48 Yards Rushing

Steven Jackson needs to be the No. 1 option in the second half. He is as powerful running back as there is in the NFL, and he possesses the unique ability to run between the tackles but can also stretch the defense outside.

2 for 3

Josh Brown missed an early attempt at a field goal that would have tied the game. A team that is struggling to score points can not afford mistakes in the kicking game. Brown was able to redeem himself in the second quarter by drilling his second attempt. The Rams need to convert on all scoring opportunities if they want to win this game.

4 Catches, 94 Yards

The Rams secondary has been as injury plagued as any team in the NFL, but they need to do a better job of guarding A.J. Green. Green is a defensive back’s nightmare. He is so tall, fast, and athletic that it is hard to contain him. If he continues to make huge plays in the second half there is no way the Rams can win this game.

1:0 Turnover Ratio

Excellent job by forcing Andy Dalton into a careless throw that resulted in a turnover. Unfortunately, the Rams offense was unable to put points on the board. Winning the turnover battle is not enough for the Rams. They need to convert those turnovers into points if they want to pull this upset.

1 Blocked Kick

The Rams defense has been playing exceptionally well in the first half. The special teams unit was able to take advantage of the Bengals pour field position and put the pressure on the punter. They were able to tip the kick giving their offense excellent field position. Plays like these will be key in the second half if St. Louis wants a victory.

Taking a look at the cellar dwellers on the NFL Power Rankings, many of them have a glaring need for a playmaker or elite talent in at least two positions.

Taking a look at the cellar dwellers on the NFL Power Rankings, many of them have a glaring need for a playmaker or elite talent in at least two positions. When these teams make their selections or trades on April 26th at the NFL Draft, they will be attempting to fill those holes.

Here are four of those teams, and the player they may tab to help turn their fortunes around in 2012 and beyond.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams are in need of a better offensive line, but they won’t be able to resist plucking the best wide receiver prospect in the country, in Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon.

Blackmon is physically similar to Terrell Owens or Andre Johnson, but he does have some character concerns. If all goes well, Sam Bradford will have a true No. 1 receiver. That is something he has yet to benefit from in his short pro career.

St. Louis’ struggles to find weapons beyond Steven Jackson is one of the biggest reasons they are 2-10. Blackmon would give the team a definite weapon in the passing game.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are going to draft Andrew Luck. With Peyton Manning’s career in doubt because of a neck injury, the Colts are fortunate a prospect like Luck is available.

The Colts could roll the dice by trading down, and taking Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III out of Baylor, but Luck and the possibility of having him learn from Manning is too much to pass up.

Washington Redskins

The Skins also need a QB, Rex Grossman has played well, but he is not a long-term solution. They would be wise to take RG3, but Matt Barkley also makes sense for them here.

The direction the league is going with the success of Cam Newton and Tim Tebow would give RG3 an edge. He is a mixture of both styles, a pocket passer with great athleticism.

Griffin makes great decisions, and only uses the speed and agility when necessary. Something tells me, there will be several teams kicking themselves two years from now, if they pass on the Heisman winner.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers certainly don’t need a QB, but they desperately need help on defense, specifically the pass coverage. Morris Claiborne is the best cornerback in college football. The current LSU Tiger has good size at 6’0″ and he has elite ball skills.

He would be a great start in what needs to be a rebuilding of the Panthers defense. The Panthers expect the return of a healthy Jon Beason in the middle; they would hope Claiborne has a similar impact as his former teammate Patrick Peterson is having in Arizona.

It is possible with those additions, and a few others through free agency, the Panthers could contend for a playoff spot in 2012.

Here are the entire NFL Power Rankings heading into Week 15:

1. Green Bay 13-0

2. Baltimore 10-3

3. Pittsburgh 10-3

4. San Francisco 10-3

5. New Orleans 10-3

6. Houston Texans 10-3

7. New England Patriots 10-3

8. Atlanta 9-5

9. Denver 8-5

10. NY Jets 8-5

11. NY Giants 7-6

12. Detroit 8-5

13 .Dallas 7-6

14. Tennessee 7-6

15. Cincinnati 7-6

16. Oakland 7-6

17. Arizona 6-7

18. Chicago 7-6

19. Seattle 6-7

20. Philadelphia 5-8

21. San Diego 6-7

22. Buffalo 5-8

23. Miami 4-9

24. Kansas City 5-8

25. Carolina 4-9

26. Washington 4-9

27. Cleveland 4-9

28. Tampa Bay 4-9

29. Jacksonville 4-10

30. Minnesota 2-11

31. St. Louis 2-11

32. Indianapolis 0-13

One telling sign: For the first time in several weeks, Bradford is back in a walking boot.

“I will say it is becoming more and more frustrating to go out there and play and then after the game feel like I’ve been set back and feel like we’ve gone back,” Bradford said after sitting out practice Wednesday.

“I think if it feels good enough Friday to get out there and test it, I’m sure we will just see where we’re at. But if it doesn’t, I don’t think we’re going to push it and set it back again.”

Coach Steve Spagnuolo seemed pessimistic about Bradford’s chances.

“But we’ll see,” Spagnuolo said. “He’s a tough guy, so he’s trying.”

Kellen Clemens, who was signed last week and will likely start if Bradford can’t go, got in some extra work after Wednesday’s practice. Backup A.J. Feeley remains sidelined with a fractured right thumb and has only limited mobility after missing Monday night’s loss.

“I feel prepared,” Clemens said. “It’s a short week, which doesn’t help, but I’m going to get three practices this week instead of two so I think by Sunday afternoon I should be ready to go.”

Clemens appeared close to playing Monday night after Bradford took a hard hit on a failed flea-flicker during the Rams’ third play, hitting his helmet on the turf. While doctors were checking out Bradford, Clemens was warming up on the sideline.

But Clemens said he was just staying loose on a cold night.

When Bradford returned after missing Games 6 and 7, it was easier to recover. He believes the setback is from general wear and tear rather than a specific instance.

“When I came back the first time I was able to make it through those first three or four games without going backwards,” Bradford said. “It got better each week, it wasn’t sore after the game.”

Bradford said the injury has compromised his mechanics and put more stress on his arm. He was just 12 for 29 for 193 yards with an interception and no touchdowns against the Seahawks.

“It’s not easy to come through and fully torque and get everything I have into it,” Bradford said. “I’m not sure if it reduces arm strength, it just kind of limits your ability to put your entire body into throws at times.”

The Rams lost another player, placing fullback Britt Miller on injured reserve with cartilage damage to his right knee, and re-signed cornerback Nate Ness. Miller has been most valuable on special teams, and had three receptions for 41 yards and five carries for 14 yards.

Miller did not make the trip for the Seattle game.

“It was a long night talking to my family, and that seemed to be the best way to go about this thing,” Miller said. “Steven Jackson always makes you look a little better than you are, so that helps.

“To be out here in kind of a tough season, I really wanted to finish with my teammates.”

Ness rejoined the team eight days after getting waived. He was first signed to the practice squad in October, and first elevated to the roster Nov. 16.

Notes: Neither of the Rams’ defensive ends practiced Wednesday. James Hall has a chest injury and Chris Long has been playing the last few weeks without practicing to protect an ankle sprain. Long is among the league leaders with a career-best 12 sacks. “At least we’ve been able to get him to the games, which is huge,” Spagnuolo said. … S Craig Dahl (right ankle), CB Josh Gordy (abdomen), OT Mark LeVoir (groin), DE Eugene Sims (ankle) and TE Stephen Spach (concussion) also did not practice.

If Wednesday had been game day, Sam Bradford said he would not have been able to play. He didn’t seem at all optimistic that a few more days would help, either.

The St. Louis Rams quarterback played in Monday night’s loss at Seattle after missing the previous game because of a persistent high left ankle sprain. With a short week and a very sore ankle, he believes it’ll be a challenge to get ready for Sunday’s home game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

What do you guys think about this.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ playoff hopes steadily dimmed during a stretch in which they faced some of the AFC’s top teams.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ playoff hopes steadily dimmed during a stretch in
which they faced some of the AFC’s top teams.

While they’ll take on two sub-.500 opponents over their final three games,
the Bengals’ only break would appear to come Sunday when they visit the woeful
St. Louis Rams.

A run of five consecutive wins – four against teams which currently have
losing records – gave Cincinnati a share of the AFC North lead in early
November. That success, however, might seem like a distant memory as the Bengals
have since dropped four of five.

All four of those defeats – two to Pittsburgh and one apiece to Baltimore
and Houston – came to teams which now share the AFC’s best record at 10-3. Last
week’s defeat to the Texans had to be the most heartbreaking and also eliminated
Cincinnati (7-6) from the division title chase.

The Bengals gave up a touchdown pass to third-string quarterback T.J. Yates
with two seconds left to lose 20-19. Cincinnati, which led 16-3 in the third
quarter and was up nine with less than six minutes to play, remains one game
behind the New York Jets for the AFC’s final playoff berth.

“We’re by no means out of anything,” said right guard Bobbie Williams, who
broke his ankle last Sunday and is out for the season. “Our chances are a little
tougher, but we can still finish up these last three with a very successful
record. Then hey, let the chips fall where they may after that.”

The Bengals play their final road game Sunday before returning home to face
Arizona, which is 6-7 but has won three straight and five of six, and a Ravens
team which has won four in a row.

That makes this game all the more crucial to Cincinnati’s playoff chances.
The Bengals have only one touchdown in each of their two games this month – Andy
Dalton has combined to go just 27 of 52 for 324 yards – but they’re facing a
Rams team averaging a league-worst 11.8 points.

St. Louis (2-11) has been outscored 103-40 during its current four-game
skid, and its only TD in Monday’s 30-13 loss at Seattle came with 4:39 to play
on Steven Jackson’s 1-yard run. It took the Rams six plays to get that yard.

“There are a lot of things we have to overcome, but we’ve got to overcome
them,” coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “We’re not going to use any excuses. We’ve
got to find a way to win.”

St. Louis also must find a way to stop the run, ranking last in the NFL with
156.8 rushing yards allowed per contest.

Facing that defense might help Cedric Benson rebound from a miserable final
30 minutes against Houston. He finished with 91 yards on 21 carries but had
minus-1 on eight attempts in the second half.

“We look forward to being able to run the ball on them consistently,” said
Benson, 117 yards shy of reaching 1,000 for the third straight season. “We still
have a challenge ahead of us, but I think we can do some positive things in the
run game.”

While the loss of Williams could hamper Benson, the return of right tackle
Andre Smith from an ailing ankle would help. Smith, the No. 6 overall pick in
the 2009 draft, sat out last week’s loss.

The Rams, meanwhile, continue to have problems staying healthy on offense.
Guard Jacob Bell joined tackles Rodger Saffold and Jason Smith on injured
reserve before last week’s game, and tackle Mark LeVoir (groin) might also be
unavailable during the short week of preparation.

Quarterback Sam Bradford has been dealing with a sprained left ankle and
didn’t seem optimistic about playing this week. If he sits out, Kellen Clemens
would likely start even though he didn’t sign with the Rams until last week.
Backup A.J. Feeley remains out with a broken thumb.

Whoever starts at quarterback will be trying to keep Cincinnati winless in
St. Louis. The Bengals have lost to the Rams there twice, in 1996 and 2003, and
to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985.

Cincinnati snapped a three-game skid to the Rams during the previous matchup
in 2007.

Gotta run!.

SEATTLE (AP) — Tarvaris Jackson threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin with 6 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Seattle Seahawks a 20-6 lead over the St. Louis Rams on Monday night.

After a 23-yard field goal by Steven Hauschka extended Seattle’s lead to 13-3 midway through the period, the Rams mounted their best offensive drive of the game.

Sam Bradford caught Seattle in a blitz and tossed a screen pass to Steven Jackson that went for 50 yards to put the Rams in the red zone for the first time. Richard Sherman was called for pass interference on the next play, giving St. Louis first-and-goal from the 1. But the Rams sputtered again — Bradford was called for intentional grounding, pushing them backward and forcing a 29-yard field goal by Josh Brown.

The Seahawks finally managed to get in the end zone on the ensuing drive. A big kick return from Leon Washington gave Seattle good field position and Tarvaris Jackson hit Baldwin on consecutive plays. The first pass went for 22 yards and the next one gave Seattle a 20-6 cushion.

Michael Robinson returned a blocked punt 17 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to get the Seahawks on the board.

Baldwin made three big plays on special teams for the Seahawks. He returned the opening kickoff 37 yards, downed the team’s first punt at the Rams 6-yard line and blocked the St. Louis punt.

Seattle later went on a 14-play drive that stalled deep in Rams territory before Hauschka made a 42-yard field goal to give the Seahawks a 10-0 lead.

After recommitting to the ground game around midseason, the Seahawks were working on five straight games with at least 100 yards rushing. Marshawn Lynch topped 100 yards himself in four of those five games, with the one time he was held under the century mark coming against the Rams, when he finished with 88 yards.

Lynch had 128 carries over the previous five games after getting 74 carries in the first six. Yet he had just 28 yards on nine carries in the first half Monday night.

Bradford started for the Rams despite a high ankle sprain that forced him to miss last week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Bradford was 6 of 18 for 50 yards through three quarters.

With Bradford struggling, Steven Jackson started to carry the Rams’ offense early in the second quarter. He broke three runs of 10-plus yards as St. Louis drove into Seattle territory. K.J. Wright came up with a sack of Bradford that stalled the drive and forced the Rams to settle for a 46-yard field goal by Brown.

Tarvaris Jackson led the Seahawks back into St. Louis territory, but a fumbled exchange between him and Lynch gave the ball back to the Rams and kept Seattle from adding to its lead.

Jackson was 17 of 27 for 174 yards and a touchdown through three quarters.

For the Rams, Steven Jackson had 56 yards on 15 carries to lead the way for a sputtering offense. Despite 14 career games against the division-rival Seahawks, he had never rushed for 100 yards against Seattle.

After a Seattle drive lost yardage and set up the Rams with good field position, St. Louis decided to go for a fourth-and-1 at the Seahawks 36. Instead of riding Steven Jackson, the Rams went to play-action and Bradford’s pass for Danario Alexander was broken up by Richard Sherman to force a turnover on downs.

Seattle was looking for its fourth win in five games and was trying to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. The Seahawks would likely need to win out and get to 9-7 for any chance of reaching the postseason for a second straight season.

That’s all for today.
