After a truly dismal 2011 season, the St. Louis Rams rang in the New Year by firing head coach Steve Spagnuolo and general manager Billy Devaney. The team ended the season 2-14 and I think the whole situation could push the team to move to Los Angeles. We’re eager to get a team here, with two competing stadium projects (Farmers Field and Los Angeles Stadium at Grand Crossing) ready to start construction, once a team is named. In addition to their poor record and recent personnel changes, the Rams have issues with their stadium and I think it could all combine to form a “perfect storm” that could bring the team back to L.A.

The St. Louis arch.
morguefile.com/spiroll

The Rams poor results speak for themselves and I agree with the decision to make changes. Rams owner Stan Kroenke is a smart businessman and didn’t get to be a billionaire by making bad decisions. The team was 10-38 in the three seasons under Spagnuolo and Devaney. Devaney has been there a bit longer than Spagnuolo, and the team was 12-52 in his four years as GM. After a horrible 1-15 season in 2009, the Rams seemed to make a comeback in 2010, going 7-9 and finishing second in the NFC West. But then after coming into the season with high expectations, the bottom dropped out and here we are.

Now that the 2011 regular season is over, I think we will see another big announcement from the team very soon, and that announcement just may be the return of the Rams to Los Angeles. The Rams left Los Angeles due to stadium issues, but now we’re looking at a situation that would bring them into a brand new stadium. I’m sure this is an attractive proposition, given the Rams are having issues with their current stadium. The Rams have played in Edward Jones Stadium since their move from Los Angeles in 1995. Although not very old, the stadium needs upgrades and is not comparable to a brand new facility. They currently have a deal that forces St. Louis to come up with a viable stadium renovation plan by March 2015, or the team is able to accept an offer to move. The city must inform the team of the plan by February 2012, which is rapidly approaching. The Rams have not yet been presented a stadium plan from the city.

AEG, the developer of the Farmers Field NFL stadium, proposed for downtown Los Angeles, has confirmed the Rams as one of the five teams they’ve had formal discussions with. Rams owner Stan Kroenke (who also owns the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets) has done business with AEG in the past, and has even bought teams from them. He is also friends with AEG owner Philip Anschutz, which would seem to make the deal easier to put together. Mr. Kroenke was part of the successful effort in 1995 to bring the team to St. Louis and helped put together a deal that had the city pay $260 million to get the team to move there. But if he can make a large profit on the the move and create much higher revenue for the team by moving them, I think he will do it. And as an L.A. football fan, I know the city would welcome their return, more so than moving a team here from another city.

Although born and raised with Eagles fans in Philadelphia, Freddy Sherman has always been a citizen of Raider Nation at heart. Since his dad got him a signed George Blanda football as child, to meeting Lyle Alzado in the 1980s, he hasn’t looked back. Follow him on twitter @thefredsherman

The move comes less than 24-hours after Sunday’s 34-to-27 loss to the 49ers.

Rams owner E. Stanley Kroenke released a statement this morning thanking both for their dedication, adding that no one is to blame for the team’s, quote, “disappointing” season.

More from stlouisrams.com.

Spagnuolo coached the team for the past three seasons after being named coach on Jan. 17, 2009. He was 10-38 in his time with the team.

Devaney was named general manager on Christmas Eve of 2008 after joining the team in February of that year as Executive Vice President of Player Personnel.

Rams owner E. Stanley Kroenke issued the following statement this morning.

“I would like to personally thank Steve and Billy for their dedication to the St. Louis Rams organization over the past several seasons. This was a difficult decision for many reasons. We have tremendous respect for Steve and Billy as people and football professionals.

“No one individual is to blame for this disappointing season and we all must hold ourselves accountable. However, we believe it’s in the best interest of the St. Louis Rams to make these changes as we continue our quest to build a team that consistently competes for playoffs and championships. We wish Steve, Billy and their families the very best in the future and thank them again for their commitment to our organization and the city of St. Louis.”

The search for a new head coach and general manager is already underway.

The team made the announcement Monday, a day after the team wrapped up a 2-14 season that tied for the NFL’s worst.

The Rams made a six-win improvement last season and played for the NFC West title in the finale, but were just 10-38 overall in three seasons with Spagnuolo and Devaney calling the shots. Devaney joined the front office in 2008. In his four years as GM, the Rams were 12-52.

Owner Stan Kroenke fired both men with one year remaining on their contracts, and with fan interest dwindling. The Edward Jones Dome was been about half-filled much of the year.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is doubtful for the regular season finale against the San Francisco 49ers. Bradford has missed five games with a high ankle sprain.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is doubtful for the regular season finale against the San Francisco 49ers. Bradford has missed five games with a high ankle sprain. Bradford is actually in an interesting position. If he plays and helps his team win, he might actually save his job. If the Rams lose, they might wind up with the top pick in the draft. That means the team is likely to draft Andrew Luck and jettison Bradford. But as much as Bradford might want to play, the likelihood is that he will be on the sidelines once again.

Bradford has not returned to practice with the Rams in the week leading up to the Week 17 contest against the San Francisco 49ers. He was hoping to push toward playing but with the game just a few days away, the chances are slim to none. Bradford has been battling the ankle injury for much of the season. The five games he missed haven’t come in succession. Bradford missed Week 6 and Week 7 but returned. He aggravated the injury again and missed more time. He last played on December 12 when the Rams faced the Seattle Seahawks. Given the nagging nature of his injury, it seems all but certain that the Rams will sit him in the final game. That means that veteran Kellen Clemens will start once again for the lowly Rams.

Bradford had a nice rookie season in 2010 but he has been a disaster in 2011. He has just six touchdown passes on the season. The Rams have the worst scoring offense in the NFL and the prevailing thought is that the team will go in a new direction. Just two years after Bradford was selected first overall in 2010, he could be out of a job if the Rams select Luck with the top pick. St. Louis will get the top pick if they lose and the Indianapolis Colts win. If that happens, the team will certainly move Bradford. Even if the Rams earn the second pick, there is a chance that a new coaching staff could move the quarterback. 2011 has been a cruel year for Bradford on the football field. It looks like he won’t get a shot at redeeming himself in the final game.

On Monday, Dec. 26, reports surfaced that St

On Monday, Dec. 26, reports surfaced that St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke is prepared to hire A.J. Smith as the team’s general manager if he is let go by the San Diego Chargers. Smith would replace Billy Devaney in the Rams front office.

I hope this rumor isn’t true. Smith is an accomplished general manager who did an outstanding job building the Chargers from the ground up. However, he also has a huge ego and has failed to reach the Super Bowl despite having one of the NFL’s most talented rosters for the past seven years.

I’m sure some Rams fans would be happy at this point just to reach .500. However, the franchise has had its issues over the years with people in positions of power within the front office. All I need to do is recall the exploits of John Shaw, Jay Zygmunt and Mike Martz. The dysfunction that took place in the Rams front office during their tenure literally ripped apart a championship-caliber team. I don’t want to see a repeat performance, and I think that would happen if the Rams hire A.J. Smith.

Despite building a roster full of Pro Bowl talent, Smith’s inability to get along with people has hurt his football teams. In Feb. 2007, Chargers president Dean Spanos fired one of the best coaches in the NFL, Marty Schottenheimer, because he had a dysfunctional relationship with Smith. The Chargers did this despite finishing their season with a 14-2 record. The team hired the mediocre Norv Turner to take his place, and the Chargers have gone downhill ever since.

In the meantime, Smith has struggled to get along with his own players. He alienated future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson prior to his departure to the New York Jets, and even now Smith has a more combative style than most general managers in professional football.

One of the players Smith has clashed with, Vincent Jackson, told FoxSports.com that he wasn’t certain if the Chargers were “only team that deals with (animosity from the GM) but it’s something that’s been around.”

With Smith’s inability to get along with others, it doesn’t sound like he’s the right person to stabilize the Rams franchise. I firmly believe the team needs to hire an excellent football man as general manager. However, Smith isn’t the man for the job unless we’re willing to live through the dysfunction that will likely come with him.

Derek Ciapala has been a Rams fan since he was a child and the team was in Los Angeles. His favorite Rams moments include Flipper Anderson’s 336-yard receiving night against the Saints in 1989, and their miracle 1999 run to their first Super Bowl victory. You can follow him on Twitter @dciapala.

Dahl said the incident was atypical for him although he is known for his physical style of play. And the Rams (2-12) need every spark they can get this season with a visit to Pittsburgh (10-4) today up next.

On Friday, Dec. 23, ESPN’s Adam Shefter reported that Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is a game-time decision for Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Rams. If Roethlisberger is unable to go, then backup Charlie Batch would likely get the start.

Some of my fellow Rams fans might think I’m crazy, but I hope Big Ben plays. The Rams pass rush has been one of the few bright spots on the team this season, and I can’t wait to see the unit go after the Steelers’ wounded offensive line.

The only chance the Rams have of winning this game is if they can force Roethlisberger into turning the ball over. The Rams will have defensive ends Chris Long and Robert Quinn going after Roethlisberger early and often, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the team blitz even more than it has already this season.

I think the Steelers will be tempted to throw more if Roethlisberger plays. With Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown lining up opposite of the Rams’ makeshift secondary, I can see Roethlisberger standing in the pocket trying to get the ball downfield. That’s where the Rams have a chance to cause Pittsburgh some problems. It’s a risky strategy, but it’s the only hope the Rams have against the mighty Steelers.

In reality, I fully expect the Steelers to come out and run the ball at the Rams regardless of who starts at quarterback. It’s no secret that the Rams have the worst rush defense in the NFL. Even though Rashard Mendenhall has struggled at times this season, the Steelers should be able to open up some holes for him. In fact, if the Steelers are determined enough, I think Mendenhall could easily run for 150 yards on the Rams.

However, if Roethlisberger plays, I think the Steelers might be aggressive enough for the Rams to take advantage of the situation. I know it’s strange for me to say that, but if Roethlisberger is as immobile as he looked against the 49ers, then the Rams have enough talent on the defensive line to cause some problems. I know this is wishful thinking, but at this point in a 2-12 season, that’s all I have.

The smart thing for the Steelers to do would be to have Roethlisberger rest his sprained ankle, but who knows if that will happen. I guess I’ll find out on Saturday.

That might come as a surprise because the secondary has been devastated by injuries this season. On the injured reserve list are cornerbacks Ron Bartell, Bradley Fletcher, Al Harris, Brian Jackson, Marquis Johnson and Jerome Murphy.

Other players have had to step up.

“We’ve still got a job to do,” safety Darian Stewart said Friday. “Everyone has to be accountable and play. It’s a blessing for me. I’m just having fun and doing what I can. We have to make plays. Injuries are a part of this game.”

Defensive coordinator Ken Flajole has had to be flexible with his secondary.

“This league is all about matchups and we spent a lot of time trying to find out if we can get guys in position where we don’t get a bad matchup,” Flajole said. “Sometimes that’s not always doable, but we work on it. I think sometimes it forces you to play maybe more coverages, different types of two-deep coverages that you maybe weren’t planning on because you’re trying to make sure that you can hold up in the back end.”

Stewart, who was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2010, entered the starting lineup midway through the season and has become a playmaker for the Rams. He had 11 tackles Monday night at Seattle and is tied for second on the team with 78 stops. He is tied for the team lead with five tackles for loss.

“I’m cool with all that but I’d rather win,” Stewart said. “Victories are the most important numbers.”

In the Rams’ first victory of the season, against New Orleans, Stewart notched his first interception and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown.

Flajole said Stewart has played several positions this year.

“We’ve had to move Stewart around a lot. He was a nickel (back) last week. He was will linebacker in sub, he’s a strong safety,” Flajole said. “And those are the things we’re dealing with right now with the injury situation and when guys don’t have the ability to be at the same position down after down after down and it’s unfamiliar locations, there’s always a learning curve there.”

Second-year pro Josh Gordy, a cornerback, has caught Flajole’s eye. He had four tackles against Seattle, a career-high seven tackles against Dallas and picked off a pass against New Orleans.

“It’s been a great opportunity for me,” said Gordy, who did not practice Friday with an abdominal injury. “I’m making the best of it. There’s more work I can do and improve. I want to make the most of it.”

And he has, Flajole said.

“I know Josh is not going to get elected into the Hall of Fame but I would say this, that kid has improved in my opinion more in the last three or four weeks since he’s been in it,” Flajole said. “I think he gets as much out of his God-given ability as anybody does. And those are things you look for as a coach.

“If guys are getting better, that’s what you look for and I think you can hang your hat on it.”

Rookie cornerback Chris Smith, who was undrafted out of Northern Illinois, made his debut in the Seattle game and had one tackle. Yet the injuries don’t stop. Cornerback Justin King hurt his back in practice Friday.

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Losing the top three cornerbacks for the season has forced
the St. Louis Rams’ defense to be creative.

The Rams are 2-11 this season and ranked 25th in overall defense. A bright
spot has been the pass defense, where St. Louis ranks No. 8 overall, allowing
208.8 yards per game headed into Sunday’s matchup with Cincinnati.

That might come as a surprise because the secondary has been devastated by
injuries this season. On the injured reserve list are cornerbacks Ron Bartell,

And he has, Flajole said.

“I know Josh is not going to get elected into the Hall of Fame but I would
say this, that kid has improved in my opinion more in the last three or four
weeks since he’s been in it,” Flajole said. “I think he gets as much out of
his God-given ability as anybody does. And those are things you look for as a
coach.

“If guys are getting better, that’s what you look for and I think you can
hang your hat on it.”

Rookie cornerback Chris Smith, who was undrafted out of Northern Illinois,
made his debut in the Seattle game and had one tackle. Yet the injuries don’t
stop. Cornerback Justin King hurt his back in practice Friday.

What do you guys think about this.

Starting Left Tackle: Orlando Pace, “The Big O”

Pace will be our left tackle, and would guard the blind side of Kurt Warner.

He was one of the greatest left tackles of all time and will be a Hall of Fame candidate when his time arrives.

Pace earned seven trips to Hawaii via pro bowl berths and was a three-time all-pro selection.

The Big O will hold down and anchor the left tackle spot for our Ultimate 53.

Starting Left Guard: Harvey Dahl

We are sliding the mean and nasty Harvey Dahl over to left guard to ensure that Pace stays plugged in and fired up at all times.

Dahl is particularly stout in the run game and is known around the NFL as one of the league’s dirtiest players.

With all the talent and finesse our team possesses at the skill position, the tough and mean Dahl helps to balance the scales an ensure that we are never labeled a finesse team, as the Greatest Show on Turf often was.

Starting Center: Andy McCollum

One of the “donut brothers,” McCollum will start under center for St. Louis.

A solid and consistent performer, he would be a steadying force on the line and amongst the offense.

Starting Right Guard: Adam Timmerman

TImmerman, McCollum’s fellow donut brother, played right guard throughout his tenure with the St. Louis Rams.

The 2001 pro bowler will retain his comfortable spot at this position.

Timmerman was a terrific right guard for the Rams after coming to St. Louis as a free agent acquisition out of Green Bay in 1999.

Starting Right Tackle: Jackie Slater

It was impossible to leave legendary Jackie Slater out of the lineup.

One of the league’s all time tackles, the legendary Ram finished his career in 1995 with St. Louis.

The seven time pro bowler and 2001 Hall of Fame inductee anchors the right side of the line and gives our Ultimate 53 Hall of Fame bookends at tackle.

Backup Left Tackle: Rodger Saffold

Saffold had a terrific rookie campaign in 2010.

In 2011, he battled injuries most of the year before falling to the injured reserve list.

Saffold would likely never see the field considering the durability of Pace. If he did, he showed enough in 2010 to have confidence that he could adequately fill the bill for a game or two.

Backup Guard: Richie Incognito

Incognito has played well in Miami.

Considering the veteran presence of this team and that Richie seems to be maturing now, he will provide valuable versatility, depth, and quality off the bench. Incognito can also provide depth at center, which was another consideration in his landing a roster spot.

Backup Center: Jason Brown

Brown’s play has been inconsistent in St. Louis, but would be exceptional as a backup and for depth.

In addition, recent high dollar Rams offensive line free agents like Brown (and Jacob Bell) have played worse than expected since arriving in St. Louis after playing well at previous stops.

We feel that Brown would play better football under the tutelage the Ultimate 53 offensive line coach, who will be introduced later.

Backup Right Tackle: Ryan Tucker

Tucker would be exceptional as a backup on this team.

Tucker played solid football at right tackle for St. Louis starting throughout two of the Rams best years, 2000 and 2001, before heading to Cleveland in free agency.

On Monday, Dec. 12, the St.

On Monday, Dec. 12, the St. Louis Rams lost their 11th game of the season in a 30-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. With the defeat, Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo’s record with the team dropped to 10-35.

I’m not sure how to deal with watching my team fail to deliver once again. It feels like the Rams are stuck in a losing culture and simply don’t know how to get out of it. However, I believe that’s not true. The franchise made some choices this season that have contributed to the teams’ failures.

Here is a look at three decisions the Rams made that have altered their season:

No quarterbacks coach

The team was wrong to begin the year without a quarterbacks coach for Sam Bradford. It doesn’t make sense for the Rams to invest millions of dollars in a franchise quarterback if they aren’t willing to bring in someone to develop him. I understand the plan was for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to work with Bradford, but he responsible for installing a completely new system. That should have been McDaniels’s focus. A young quarterback needs someone to mentor him, especially in a season like this one, and a quarterbacks coach could have done that.

Giving Josh McDaniels too much power to run the offense

Let’s be honest here. The Rams didn’t have many weapons to begin the season with. There wasn’t one breakaway receiver or established tight end on the opening day roster. In hindsight, it seems rather idiotic for Spagnuolo to bring in a coach who likes to throw downfield more when the team doesn’t have the personnel to fit that type of offense. What’s worse is that both McDaniels and Spagnuolo have yet to learn from this mistake. They keep keep making poor decisions with the offense.

A prime example of this is when the Rams were on the Seahawks’ goal line in the fourth quarter of Monday’s game. The team has one of the league’s best running backs, but instead of putting the ball in Steven Jackson’s hands in the first five plays, McDaniels rolled a gimpy Bradford out of the pocket twice and ran him on a quarterback sneak. Why on earth would the Rams trust Bradford to get in the end zone instead of Jackson? Eventually, McDaniels called a run for Jackson, and the team’s all-time leading rusher scored on the play.

I believe McDaniels is a solid offensive football mind who could do a great job with the team in future, but he needs to quit being so stubborn and call plays that fit with the personnel available. Spagnuolo should have reined in some of these poor decisions by now.

Passing on Torrey Smith in the draft

The Rams offense has been limited this year without a speed receiver to stretch the field. However, the team had the chance to draft a deep threat in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft, but the Rams’ front office passed on him. Maryland’s Torrey Smith was regarded as one of the fastest receivers available, and he was sitting there for the Baltimore Ravens when they selected him with the 26th pick of the second round. Though he’s been inconsistent with the Ravens, Smith has established himself as the team’s primary deep threat and has posted huge days against the Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals this season.

If general manager Billy Devaney had selected Smith in the draft, defenses would have been forced to play the Rams differently this season. The club’s current receivers (including Brandon Lloyd) don’t scare anyone, but if the team had begun the year with a solid deep threat on the roster, the entire offense would have been more dynamic than it is now.

Looking forward

The team has to reverse some of the decisions it has made in the past eight months. Hiring a quarterback coach to mentor Bradford is a must, as is drafting a speed receiver. I’m not sure what the right call is with McDaniels, because I don’t believe he was ever given enough talent to work with. However, the team’s next head coach needs to rein in McDaniels if he remains with the Rams.

I understand these three factors aren’t the only issues the team has to deal with. The rush defense needs work, and the offensive line is a mess. Of course, injuries were a problem too. However, some of the Rams issues could have been minimized if there was better decision-making in the front office. Hopefully, that changes for next season.

Quarterback Sam Bradford was back on the practice field Saturday for the St. Louis Rams in preparing the team for its game Monday against the Seahawks in Seattle.

Bradford, hampered by a high left ankle sprain, did not practice at all during the week and missed last week’s game at the 49ers. He sustained the ankle injury Oct. 16 at Green Bay and missed two games.

Coach Steve Spagnuolo said he’s not ready to name him the starter.

“The test here, you know, when I talk with (trainer) Reggie (Scott) is see how it feels tomorrow,” Spagnuolo said. “Now, we are treading lightly and going safe.”

Bradford took less than half of the practice snaps, splitting time with Kellen Clemens, who was signed Thursday after he was cut Wednesday by Houston.

Clemens split duties Friday with No. 3 quarterback Tom Brandstater, who did not take any reps with the first team Saturday. Brandstater, who is in his second year out of Fresno State, has not played in an NFL game.

No. 2 quarterback A. J. Feeley is out with a fractured right thumb, which he hurt against the 49ers.

Seahawks: Linebacker David Hawthorne (knee) is expected to play Monday after fully participating in practice on Saturday.

Colts: Backup linebacker A.J. Edds was the only active Colts player who did not travel with the team to Baltimore on Saturday for the game Sunday. Edds has been limited all week with a left foot injury that he sustained last week

at New England.

Patriots: New England signed defensive lineman Eric Moore and promoted defensive back Malcolm Williams from the practice squad. Defensive lineman Jermaine Cunningham was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, and defensive back Sterling Moore was released.
