Halftime Notes: Improved defensive effort keeping things close against Arkansas

Colorado State football (0-2) started Saturday's contest with Arkansas (1-0) with a turnover when senior safety Jordan Fogal picked off quarterback Ty Storey at midfield on the first possession of the game.

Four plays later, senior kicker Wyatt Bryan converted on a 55-yard field goal attempt to give CSU its first lead of the 2018 season. The 55-yard field goal is tied for the fifth-longest field goal in CSU football history and was the longest successful attempt by a Colorado State kicker since 1992.

Following the turnover on Arkansas' first offensive series, CSU was able to force stops on three of Arkansas' first four possessions of the half. The Rams would have also had a stop on Arkansas' 14 play, 73-yard touchdown drive at the end of the first quarter, but an offsides call on cornerback Andrew Hawkins negated a 46-yard missed field goal attempt by the Razorbacks and kept the drive alive.

In total, Arkansas outgained CSU by over 100 yards of offense in the half. The Hogs predominantly moved the football on the ground, recording 196 rushing yards as a team, compared to only 36 yards through the air.

Offensively, CSU was able to rip off a few nice plays, but the Rams were never able to create any kind of rhythm on that side of the football.

Senior quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels led the offense on the first three series and was able to produce one scoring possession. The Rams only totaled 28 yards of offense in those series combined and turned the football over once.

Following an interception from Carta-Samuels at the end of the first quarter, redshirt junior QB Collin Hill saw the field again this week. On his one series, Hill threw three consecutive incompletions and the offense went three-and-out, before being replaced again by Carta-Samuels.

CSU went on to make two more field goals in the half and in the process, Bryan passed Steve Bartalo for most career points in CSU football history with 295.
