Rams battle diverse conditions, win Paintbrush Invitational

Winner, winner chicken dinner. The Colorado State men’s golf team earned its second tournament victory of the 2018 season at the 2018 Paintbrush Invitational on Oct. 8th and 9th. The 54-hole tournament was hosted by Denver University, and played at the Colorado Golf Club (Par 72 – 7,465 yards) in Parker, Colo.

Despite being delayed by snow and playing the entire tournament with temperatures in the mid-30s, the Rams led throughout the two-day tournament, finishing 6-over 870. No. 2 Oregon finished a full eight strokes behind the Rams at 14-over 178. Northern Colorado finished third in the field at 19-over 883.

"The conditions were awful, with it being 35 degrees and snowing all day with one play stoppage,” head coach Christian Newton said in a release.

“The guys hung in and did an awesome job in tough weather, as even with all of that, I saw a lot of smiles throughout the day. I can't tell you how proud I am of them responding after the last tournament to put together such a gutsy performance as this."

In the lineup for the first time this season, freshman Oscar Teiffel finished with medalist honors (10-under 206). On Sunday, Teiffel had the low score for the round, finishing the day with six birdies and only one bogie. Teiffel shot under par in all three rounds (70-69-67).

In total, CSU had three individuals place in the top 20 and all five team members placed in the top 40 for the tournament.

"Oscar's round today was one of the most impressive I have ever seen,” Newton said. “He was calm throughout the day and never flinched, knowing he was playing to win the tournament. To play the way he did in those conditions was nothing short of amazing."

Colorado State will conclude the fall portion of the schedule at the Saint Mary's Invitational in November. Last season, the Rams placed third in the event.
