Preview: Rams host Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Colorado State men’s basketball started its season with a blowout of Colorado Christian University, Wednesday night. In the victory, five different players finished with double digit scoring figures, and the Rams recorded 21 assists as a team.
Saturday’s matchup against Arkansas-Pine Bluff will present a tougher test for CSU. The Golden Lions were 14-21 overall last season, but went 13-6 in conference play. Many of those players returned this year, including three starters and eight letter winners.
One of those starters is senior guard Martaveous McKnight, the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year. As a junior, McKnight averaged 18.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, and it appears that McKnight is picking up where he left off. In the Golden Lions’ loss to San Diego State, McKnight scored 29 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Limiting McKnight’s impact will be crucial for the Rams on Saturday.
When the Golden Lions and Rams tip off, it will be the third time that the two teams have played at Moby Arena. Arkansas-Pine Bluff first came to Fort Collins in 2007, and was handily defeated, 73-48. In 2010, CSU won by 31 points (82-51). In each of the previous two meetings, Niko Medved was an assistant coach under Tim Miles.
