Nico Carvacho recognized as one of the nation's elite big men
Nico Carvacho has been named one of 10 finalists for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The redshirt junior was not originally named one of the 21 candidates for the award in October, but played himself into the conversation with his dominance on the glass this season. So far in 2018-19, Carvacho is leading the nation with 12.9 rebounds per game and is Colorado State’s leading scorer at 15.8 points per game.
"I'm extremely blessed to be a finalist for such a prestigious award," Carvacho said in a release. "Thanks to God, my family, my coaches and teammates because without their help, support and hard work, I wouldn't be able to be where I am today."
Carvacho, 22, has 832 career rebounds and only needs 19 boards to surpass Pat Durham (1985-89) as the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Heading into Saturday’s matchup with Wyoming, Frisco, TX., native also only needs one more double-double to become CSU’s all-time leader. Carvacho is currently tied with his former teammate Emmanuel Omogbo (2015-17), who holds the record with 28.
